Maria Luísa de Sousa Holstein, 3rd Duchess of Palmela, was
born in Lisbon on 4 August 1841 and died in Rio do Porto (Sintra) on 2
September 1909. She was a disciple of the sculptor Anatole Célestin Calmels
since 1858. Among her early works, The Fisherman (1870) stands
out, in which the influence of Romanticism received from her master can be
observed. This work was exhibited in 1874, at the 10th exhibition of the
Sociedade Promotora de Belas-Artes, together with the relief portrait of the
Countess of Ficalho. Among her most notable works is Diógenes (1883),
the original in marble of which is in the Palácio Palmela (Rato, Lisbon). It
was very successful, and several reduced versions in bronze were produced. The
work was exhibited in 1884 at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français.
She participated in the same event again in 1886 with the work Sainte-Thérèse (1885),
which earned her an honorable mention. Portraits constitute an important part
of her work, examples being the busts of the Marquis of Sá da Bandeira (c.
1870, Museum of the Geographical Society of Lisbon) and of the Duke of Terceira
(Military Museum). Progressively moving towards Naturalism, a work worth
highlighting is the bust of Negra (1885), also exhibited at
the Paris Salon of 1886, which portrays Maria José dos Santos, maid to the
Duchess of Palmela and daughter of her parents' cooks. Shortly afterwards, she
sculpted one of his most acclaimed works, the Fiat Lux, which is an
allegorical representation of the Genius of the Progress of Medicine.
Originally made of bronze, the work was given to António de Lencastre, her
personal doctor. With the aim of becoming an academic of merit at the Royal
Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon, the Duchess of Palmela created a version in
Carrara marble in 1900, which today belongs to the collection of the National
Museum of Contemporary Art. Another important achievement was the
sculpture Mater Admirabilis. The Duchess of Palmela was also a
ceramist, having founded, with the Countess of Ficalho, the Ratinho Ceramics
Workshop (or Factory) in the Palmela Palace.

João de Ruão (1500-1580)
-
João de Ruão (1500-1580) was a sculptor and architect of French origin who came to work in Portugal between 1527-1528. His action was remarkable for the introduction and consolidation of Renaissance values in this country, centered mainly in Coimbra, where he had a workshop. His work is usually divided into two distinct phases, the former dominating classical expression and harmony (1530-1540); the second shows greater austerity (since 1540). His first documented work in Portugal was the Renaissance portal of the Church of Atalaia do Ribatejo. In addition to sculpture, he carried out important architectural works, such as the Porta Especiosa of the Sé Velha; the Cloister of Manga (Santa Cruz Monastery); or the Chapel of the Treasurer (for the Church of São Domingos de Coimbra, Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro).

Mestre Pero (séc. XIV)
-
Mestre Pero (14th century) was a sculptor of probable Aragonese origin, active in Portugal in the middle of the fourteenth century. Much of his work was done at his workshop in Coimbra. It had a prominent role in the renovation of Gothic sculpture in Portugal. It is assumed that his first work in this country was the tomb of D. Isabel de Aragón (1271-1336). He is also referred to as the master of the tomb images of the Archbishop of Braga D. Gonçalo Pereira (Cathedral of Braga), executed in partnership with master Telo Garcia. He is also awarded, among others, the following works: Tomb of D. Vataça Láscaris de Ventimiglia (Old Cathedral of Coimbra); tomb of the Infanta D. Isabel (Convent of Santa Clara-a-Nova); the tomb of Rui do Casal (Igreja de São João de Alporão, Santarém); tomb of João Gordo (Sé do Porto); Virgin and Child (National Museum of Ancient Art); Senhora do Ó (MNMC, Coimbra) and the Angel of an Annunciation (Church of Santa Maria da Alcáçova, Montemor-o-Velho); etc. It is also worth mentioning the sculptural group of the Ferreiros Chapel, Igreja Matriz de Oliveira do Hospital, one of the most important Portuguese gothic funerary spaces, classified as a National Monument (1936). Commissioned by Domingos Joanes, this set includes the Medieval Knight sculpture, or Domingos Joanes as a knight. There are two copies of this work without knowing for sure the original and the copy - the other is in the National Museum of Machado de Castro.
